Strategic Partnership Vision
Based on this vision, Patel partnered with Reallysec. He believed that with advanced technology and a professional team, it was entirely possible to achieve high-precision automated diamond clarity grading through cloud-based AI.
GIA provided professional image resources and tens of millions of diamond records reviewed by certified experts, while Reallysec contributed AI algorithm capabilities and an elastic cloud computing platform. Together, they established GIA's cloud-based AI grading system, setting a new benchmark for intelligent transformation in the gemstone industry.
Automating Diamond Clarity Assessment with AI: A Joint Innovation by GIA and Reallysec
The Complexity of Clarity Assessment
Diamond clarity assessment is a highly complex and specialized process. Gemologists typically use loupes, microscopes, or high-definition images to identify and evaluate "inclusions" within a diamond. These inclusions may be tiny impurities, bubbles, or micro-fractures extending from the surface into the interior.
Flawless diamonds are extremely rare, accounting for only a tiny fraction of all GIA-graded diamonds. Most diamonds contain one or more inclusions, and it is precisely these subtle differences that make each diamond unique.
From Proof of Concept to Production Deployment
After completing the AI grading proof of concept (PoC), GIA decided to advance the project to a commercially viable production stage. To achieve this, GIA partnered with the Reallysec Cloud and AI Engineering Team to build a full-stack platform with development, testing, production, and disaster recovery capabilities.
GIA uploaded professional image data to the platform deployed on Reallysec Cloud. The entire system was built on its Kubernetes cluster service, providing elastic scaling, high availability, and compute-intensive workload scheduling.

On the hardware side, the platform utilized a serverless cluster composed of 3 NVIDIA K80 GPUs, each configured with one shared virtual node and one bare-metal node, ensuring high throughput and high-speed inference processing.
AI Model and Expert Collaboration Mechanism
The grading system integrates two core AI models:
- Automatic Plotting Model: Automatically detects and visualizes diamond inclusions;
- Clarity Grading Model: Determines the overall diamond grade based on visual and structural features.
System analysis results are pushed in real time to the iPad application terminal used by GIA graders, allowing experts to review and modify assessments. Human feedback is simultaneously transmitted back to the system, triggering grade re-evaluation and feeding into subsequent model training, forming a continuous optimization feedback loop.
AI-Driven Future: From Pilot to Full Deployment
GIA grades millions of diamonds each year. Patel anticipates that the AI-driven solution will handle 70%–80% of standard grading tasks in the future, particularly suited for smaller diamonds with standardized processes, thereby allowing human experts to focus on more complex assessment cases.
Currently, the system has been piloted in 2 of GIA's 11 global laboratories, employing a strategy of "parallel AI and human assessment." As the algorithms continue to improve, GIA is gradually rolling out the platform to laboratories worldwide.

As the technology partner for this project, Reallysec provided the AI inference framework, model deployment capabilities, and cloud infrastructure support, significantly accelerating the grading process and reducing human bias.

The AI system has also dramatically improved grading accuracy and consistency. Although human graders have professional training backgrounds, their judgments still exhibit subtle variations. AI models can achieve full-process standardization, enhancing repeatability and strengthening assessment credibility.

Just as GIA revolutionized the grading process by introducing the jeweler's loupe in the 1930s, AI is now redefining the standards of grading precision and efficiency.
